ASA bans bingo ads from Tombola
Thursday, 26 March 2009

The UK Advertising Standards Association's has come down hard again on the online gambling market and has banned an online advertising campaign designed by the JDA agency for Tombola Bingo for being too appealing to young people. This is following other high profile bans including one meted out to Ladbrokes online casino.

The first ad featured "Tombola world" with a ferris wheel, a big top and a rollercoaster.  The speil ran as follows: "Every day, thousands of people join in the fun at Tombola.co.uk.  With over 35 chat rooms to choose from, you can join the ride, make new friends and play your favourite bingo games.  Plus join now for more chances to WIN with up to £25 Money Match!".

The complaint was that the content of the ad was such that it would appeal to youngsters.

Tombola protested that the ads were meant to be a  a metaphor for the online bingo experience at the online bingo room and which would attract new bingo players but not attract a younger clientele. The ads had been running for some weeks with no problems.

However, the ASA ruled against the group, and the ads went down.

Beware all ye online casino, bingo and poker marketing execs!
